Why A Big Honking DSLR?
Why the Canon 5D MK II after three years of using compact cameras like the Sigma DP1, Leica D-Lux 3 and 4 and lately the Panasonic GF1? Simple, I still do a lot of concert work and the occasional portrait gig for pay to finance my photography hobby. My original 5D is not as good as the new 5D MK II and if I ever need HD video, well, the 5D MK II is just about all I would need.
Live View on the 5D MK II is wonderful as is the redesigned menu system. A flip out articulated LCD would have been a big plus. Honestly, I did not want to buy this camera. I have grown to dislike the weight and bulk of DSLRs like the 5D MK II and the associated L glass. But, I sometimes need such a system and find that not having it is worse than having it. That statement may only make sense to me but in so many ways it is true. I still lust for something like the Leica M9.
Don't get me wrong, the 5D MK II is a great camera. It really is. The only negative in my use of the camera is the weight an bulk. I like everything but that.
Lenses I Use
I have decided to use a number of non-L primes with this camera to cut down on the bulk. Lenses I have for it are: 28mm f/1.8, 50mm f/1.4, 85mm f/1.8, 24-70mm f/2.8 L with IS and the 70-200mm f/2.8 L with IS. As long as I am using primes the bulk is not that bad but once you mount the L glass you're toting a lot of camera around.
There's not a lot I can say about the camera that has not been said before. It's a full frame sensor and It delivers huge files which allow for a lot of cropping and of course a lot of resolution. The dynamic range is good as is the color. The AF, while not as fast as the higher end Canons is faster than anything else I own and has never left me wanting for more. The AF is very good in low light which is a big plus for me.
When it came time to upgrade from my 5D the only camera I considered was the 5D MK II. What will I do with my old 5D? Not sure.. I had it listed for sale on Craig's List and was immediately set upon by the scammers. I may convert it to IR. I may explore the possibility of removing the AA filter for a BW machine. I may keep it as a backup.
While I kept the new camera a secret for a month or so I was amazed at the number of people who thought it was another Leica based on the photos I had posted here. So much for "The Leica Look".
